Tie Your Story in With Newsworthy Events

Nancy Marshall If you are trying to promote a story idea to the media, you should tie your idea in with something that is happening in the news. For example, it is very hot out right now.

For example, if you are a manufacturer of sports drinks, it might be a good time to position yourself as an expert on dehydration and talk to the media about the importance of staying hydrated in hot weather.

How do you do this? You write letters to the media introducing yourself as an expert on a particular subject. You give your background and experience in your field. You tell them that you are available to comment on news of interest to your field.

One of my clients is U.S. Cellular. There was legislation passed in New York recently to regulate the use of cellular phones while driving. Now is the prime time for me to be presenting my client, the district sales manager for U.S. Cellular in Maine, as an expert on wireless phones.

While I think about getting started on sending those letters and making those calls, I’m going to go and get a drink of water so I can stay hydrated.

Good Luck! This is just one more way that you can build a positive public relations program for your company, client, or organization!
