Nancy Marshall Do you keep a database of your customers or prospects? Then consider keeping track of birthdays and sending birthday cards. This can be a powerful way of showing your customers that you care about them.

Say, for example, that you are a whitewater rafting outfitter or a windjammer captain and you host a guest in the month of July. You capture that guest's birthday in your database, then in February you send him or her a birthday card with a hand-written note. This card will create a real impact on the customer and they will be more likely to book another rafting trip or windjammer cruise with you the next year.

Now, if you are the Marketing V.P. of Coca-Cola or McDonald's, you probably will not be able to send 8 billion birthday cards to your customers all over the world. However, you can keep track of your top 100 customers' birthdays. For most businesses, 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers, so make sure you have those names in a database and you pay attention to them. It will help your business grow.
