Nancy Marshall Communications has been staying on top of technology in communications over the past 17 years and the newest evolution is called "social media." This term refers to the creation of online communities where people who share common interests and passions join together on the internet for dialogue, advice, counsel and camaraderie.

No longer do companies or organizations 'control' their messages. Instead, they must enter into a dialogue with their customers or their members in a democratic style. Instead of focusing on pushing our message out, we must focus on building community with our stakeholders.

Here at NMC, we focus on creating strategic messages for our clients and weaving those messages into our clients' communications. In that role, we are perfectly poised to help our clients enter the world of social media. We can define the messages then guide our clients through the process of setting up a social media program. In order to be successful, you must have someone in-house who can 'own' the program and manage it internally because nothing can backfire on you like the appearance of being represented by an agency in an online community. The communities want to know that the spokesman is someone entrenched in the organization, ideally the head of the organization, but if not the head, then someone who is dually authorized to speak for the organization.
