SKOWHEGAN, Maine - The Pickup Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) hosted an event on January 18, 2012 to introduce young children and their families who live in the Skowhegan area to the benefits of eating healthy, locally-produced food. Lead by Manager Sarah Smith, the children and parents were introduced to a variety of farm fresh produce and met several of the farmers involved with The Pickup.
Smith explains, "We had such a great time talking to these families and children about local food. It was wonderful to watch the children sampling the Sweet Dumpling Squash and by the end of the evening, the plate was pretty much empty. We feel strongly that healthy habits start when you are young and the food baskets from The Pickup are a convenient and cost effective way to introduce these children and their families to new foods and new ways of cooking."
A generous private donation has allowed The Pickup to offer 50 grants to cover 50 percent of the costs of the upcoming summer share. People are encouraged to contact Sarah at thepickupcsa@gmail.com for an application form.
Visitors enjoyed treats of Sweet Dumpling and Delicata Squash from Smith's own Grassland Farm along with warm, mulled cider from Heather Davis of Cayford Orchards. A tour of the Somerset Grist Mill by Amber Lambke completed the evening.
