Celebrate Winter at
Maine Ski Mountain Events

MAINE - If you missed out on a summer blueberry pie eating contest or fireworks, you can redeem yourself by experiencing these and other fun activities at Maine ski mountain events.

White White World Week is the annual winter carnival at Sugarloaf Resort in Carrabassett Valley. The "wackiest week in ski country" happens Jan. 23-26 with nightly themed parties at on- and off-mountain restaurants and bars, concerts, spectator-friendly races, and the crowning of the carnival king and queen.

Bring your ugly ski sweater and appetite for blueberry pie to the 24th Annual Family Fest at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton Feb. 23. Happenings include a snow sculpture contest, ski poker run, snow volleyball tournament, activities for children, a blueberry pie eating contest and the ugliest ski sweater contest. All activities are free.

Free-heeled skiing enthusiasts will gather at Saddleback Maine March 10 for the 8th Annual Telemark Invasion. There will be telemark equipment demonstrations, instruction clinics, group ski runs, and an up and down race using ski climbing skins.

The Mars Hill Winterfest takes place March 10-11 at Bigrock Ski Area in Aroostook County. A human slalom race, Kardboard Klassic sled race, big air terrain park contest, youth ski race, torchlight parade and fireworks, and a hot chicken sandwich supper are planned during the weekend.

Chocolate Factory Tours with a Valentine: Take the guesswork out of choosing the right box of chocolates for a Valentine's gift by taking your valentine to see and sample the sweets at one of these chocolate and candy makers.

Haven's Candies gives guided factory floor tours by appointment at their flagship facility in Westbrook. See how solid and filled chocolates, fudge, nut clusters, or hard candies are made.

The only thing Monica Elliott enjoys more than making her sweet creations is to see people enjoy them. Visit Monica's Chocolates in Lubec, where the owner gives free samples of any of her popular bonbons, truffles, or caramels that you desire.

Len Libby Chocolatier in Scarborough offers factory tours to see how their Maine needhams, Bangor Taffy, and chocolate nonpareils are made.

What's New & Unique

Slope Side Sushi
Sunday River Resort in Newry has a new Korean and Japanese eatery inside the South Ridge Base Lodge. Cho Sun specializes in noodle bowls, fresh sushi, sake and tasty mai-tais. And the new Sushi Side Bar at Gepetto's Restaurant at Sugarloaf Resort is another slope side sushi destination in Maine.

Thumbs Up to Maine
To celebrate its 42,000 Facebook fans the Maine Office of Tourism (MOT) is seeking photos from fans giving a thumbs up to Maine. Photos posted on the MOT Facebook page wall will be added to a Thumbs Up To Maine gallery, and a lucky few will be rewarded for participating.

More Backcountry Trail for Winter Fun

A new 14-mile section of the Maine Hut Trail maintained by the Maine Huts & Trails organization is open to cross country skiers and snowshoers. The free trail now stretches a total of 45 miles from Carrabassett Valley to The Forks, with three staffed lodges that have overnight accommodations, meals and hot running water.
