Northern Forest Canoe Trail, Inc.
Fact Sheet

Mission: The Northern Forest Canoe Trail is a 740-mile inland paddling trail tracing historic travel routes across New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine. NFCT, Inc. connects people to the Trail's natural environment, human heritage, and contemporary communities by stewarding, promoting, and providing access to canoe and kayak experiences along this route.

Location: Waitsfield, VT

Trail Location: The trail stretches from Old Forge, New York, to Fort Kent, Maine, and is the longest water trail in the Northeast, situated within a day’s drive of almost 80 million people. The trail passes through 45 communities, from Plattsburgh, NY; to Highgate Falls, VT; Groveton, NH; and Jackman, Maine.

Waterways: 22 rivers and streams including the Saranac, Missisquoi, Nulhegan, Connecticut, Androscoggin, West Branch of the Penobscot and the St. John. 56 lakes and ponds including the Saranac lakes, Lake Champlain, Lake Memphremagog, Umbagog Lake, Rangeley Lake and Moosehead Lake.

Carries or Portages: 62, totaling 55 miles.

Skills Needed: Novice to expert, canoeists and kayakers are welcome. The route includes flat and whitewater paddling, poling, lining and portaging.

Direction to Paddle: All sectional maps describe waterways in downstream direction. Sectional and destination paddlers typically choose to paddle downstream. Through paddlers should paddle west to east to minimize upstream paddling.

Lodging options: Primitive campsites, most with a picnic table, fire ring and outhouse, are found on shorelines and islands in each state. Waterside inns, hotels and state parks, and walkable in-town accommodations are also available.

Trail History: The idea for the Northern Forest Canoe Trail was brought to life in the 1990's when Mike Krepner, Ron Canter, and Randy Mardres of Native Trails, Inc. researched the traditional east-west water routes used by Native Americans and early settlers in the Northern Forest Region, from the Adirondacks to Northern Maine. In 2000, Kay Henry and Rob Center - former principals of Mad River Canoe Company - incorporated the Northern Forest Canoe Trail organization as a way to translate this research into a recreational, community, and regional resource.
